Zeldin Picks-Up GOP Support

by Maureen Daly

Long Island Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) announced a series of major congressional endorsements this week from his fellow Republican members of Congress, as he moved to consolidate his nomination for Governor in the 2022 gubernatorial election.

Zeldin picked-up support across the political spectrum, including moderates like US Congressman John Katko of central New York and conservatives like US Congressman Jim Jordan of Ohio.

“It has been an honor to serve our great state with my friend and colleague Lee Zeldin and fight with him to safeguard our homeland, lower taxes and secure a brighter future for all New Yorkers," said Katko.

Other members of Congress announcing their support this week for Zeldin include US Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis of Staten Island; Congressman Chris Jacobs of upstate New York; and freshman Congressman Andrew Garbarino of Islip.

The four Republican New York State Senators who represent Long Island in the state Senate also endorsed Zeldin this week.

These endorsements come at a critical time for Zeldin to "lock-down" the GOP nomination. He now has the support of a clear majority of the Republican State Committee vote for the 2022 Republican State Convention; and the overwhelming support from GOP elected officials in New York.

Two other candidates - former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino and the son of Rudy Guiliani and his ex-wife Donna Hanover, Andrew Guilani - have announced they are running for Governor, although political analysts now give them almost no chance of success.

Zeldin's impressive endorsements from local Republican officials from around the state are matched by his impressive early fundraising success, with over $5 million already raised by Zeldin for the Governor's race.
