Huntington’s Highway Superintendent Gives Away More Than 3,000 Holiday Turkeys

By Samantha Carey

Town of Huntington’s Highway Superintendent, Andre Sorrentino and family, handed out 3,250 turkeys to families this holiday season in preparation for Thanksgiving.

The Sorrentino’s and volunteers handed out turkeys for families with vouchers for the Sorrentino Family Foundation Turkey Drive held each year. Town residents picked up their turkeys alongside the road at PAS Auto Body on New York Avenue.

“We were able to secure more turkeys this year because of all the donations,” said Sorrentino, grateful for the support received for the drive. “We had about 50 volunteers, and in total there was a great turnout.”

Volunteers and support this year came from elected officials including New York State Assemblyman Steve Stern, Suffolk County Legislator Stephanie Bontempi, Huntington Town Councilman Salvatore Ferro, and more. Members of the 100 Women of Huntington and Suffolk police were also in attendance, along with Deputy Parks Director Walter Edwards directing traffic.

“This Turkey Drive is only a small step in meeting the needs of our community, but a thousand little steps make for a very special journey,” said Sorrentino. “If everybody can try and help one family, there is strength in numbers. So let’s all get together and help the community.”
