FOB Hosts Oyster Bay Beach Clean-up

The Friends of the Bay organized its first beach cleanup of 2024 in Oyster Bay, attracting over 50 volunteers last Saturday to Beekman Beach.

Beekman Beach is located at the west end of Theodore Roosevelt Park. near the Oyster Bay Waterfront Center, and the crossing of West Neck Road and the Oyster Bay LIRR train tracks.

According to the clean-up organizers, the clean up was a huge success, with over 50 volunteers collecting over 135 pounds of trash.

“These volunteer cleanups are such an uplifting and gratifying experience for everyone involved,”said Christine Suter, the new executive director of Friends of the Bay.“It’s a chance for people to get some fresh air and exercise and see instant results of their efforts."

"At the end of these events the beaches look pristine," added Suter. "It’s also a great learning experience for people of all ages to see firsthand what some of the most common items are that are littering our shorelines."

The Friends of the Bay is an environmental conservation and advocacy organization located in Oyster Bay.  They host monthly beach cleanups from February through November.

The mission of Friends of the Bay is to preserve, protect and restore the ecological integrity and productivity of the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Estuary and the surrounding watershed.
