Cold Spring Harbor HS Debuts New STEAM Wing
By Maureen Daly
Cold Spring Harbor High School unveiled its new STEAM Wing last week.
STEAM stands for “Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering and Mathematics” – and represents a renewed effort to teach children the “hard sciences” of math, chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering.
The new wing provides a state-of-the art innovation center where the possibilities for students to collaborate and expand their knowledge and research skills will be taken to the next level, according to the district. It was a collaboration between the school district and community.
"Cold Spring Harbor has always been a community that values a high-quality education for all students and strives for academic excellence," stated CSH Superintendent Jill Gierasch. "In partnership with our families and community, we are committed to providing students with the skills needed to achieve their goals.”
“Our new STEAM Wing is a true testament to what can be achieved for our students when we work together,” added Gierasch. “I am confident our students will take advantage of every opportunity available in our STEAM Wing to develop the skills needed to become tomorrow’s innovators and leaders."
The three-room STEAM Wing, which was funded through a 2015 bond, will offer something for all students:
Three adjoining suites connecting Room A11, known as the new Family and Consumer Science Center; Room A12, which houses the new Art STEAM suite; and Room A13, the new Technology Center for robotics and engineering, will provide cross collaboration and multipurpose versatility for STEAM projects for the junior high students as well as master chef and electives opportunities for high school students.
The Cold Spring Harbor School District – which includes Lloyd Harbor and Cold Spring Harbor in Suffolk County, and Laurel Hollow in Nassau County – is one of Long Island’s top-rated school districts.
The world-renowned Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories are located within the boundaries of the school district.
The School District held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to see the completion of this state-of-the-art facility come to fruition, after many years of planning.
