Spitzer
Scandal; Crime Fighter Crashes
New
York's Governor Eliot Spitzer, who has spent over
a decade promising to defeat crime and won the governorship
in 2006 on promises to end corruption in Albany, is
being asked to resign by political adversaries today,
after being implicated by federal officials in a prostitution
ring crackdown.
Spitzer, who made only a brief
statement Monday, did not aknowledge the specific
accusations or the issue of his possible resignation,
but instead apologized to his family and the people
of New York for not upholding ethical standards which
he set for himself. He went on to say that the issue
at hand was a private matter and not political in
nature, adding that politics is not not about individuals,
but about ideas. He also said that "We sought
to bring real change to New York, and that will continue."
According
to reports,
Spitzer is implicated as "Client 9" in a
court document related to a federal investigation
into a prostitution ring, which involved the FBI and
IRS. He supposedly was recorded by a federal wire
tap, in which he allegedly discussed the details of
an arrangement with a prostitute from a high-end sex
service and transported her across state lines; if
charged, Spitzer could face felony charges. It is
still unclear whether the money used for these transations,
in the thousands of dollars, was public or private
money.
Spitzer has built much of his career
on ethics and fighting crime, which other than the
legal ramifications of the governor comitting a crime,
says critics, is enough reason for him to immediately
step down. While a slew of Albany insiders predicted
his resignation Monday afternoon, Spitzer and his
office remained quiet after the brief afternoon press
conference and have not mentioned resignation to the
public as of this time. Other sources close to the
situation tell The Leader that the governor
may be waiting for "the storm to blow over"
to see if his administartion can weather more controversy,
or may be holding out to use his position of power
as a bargaining chip in making a deal with federal
prosecuters related to possible charges that have
yet to be filed against him.
