Serial Burglar Arrested In Glen Cove

serialburglar
At about 8:30am on the morning of June 22, a teenager, while inside her home on Hendrick Ave., Glen Cove, reported that she thought someone was trying to get in the back door of her house.  The girl's mother chased after the man, who fled through the backyard and down a large hill into the wooded behind the old OTB near Long Branch Road.  Glen Cove P.D. received the call and responding officers quickly formed a perimeter around the area to try and prevent escape.  Once the area was contained, a systematic search was put into place. Officer Brian Genova heard branches cracking and went on to find it was the suspect running through the woods in an attempt to elude capture. The suspect, William Carrillo, a student at Glen Cove High School, was taken into custody by Officer Genova and charged with attempted burglary.
Detective Karl Van Allen was assigned to the investigation. Being well aware that there had been a recent rash of residential burglaries around Glen Cove with some similarities, he knew his interview with the suspect was going to be critical if he wanted to help any of the other victims get their property back and put an end to the recent rash of break-ins.  Another interesting fact that several of the burglaries had in common was that some of the houses that were hit had a dog in the home at the time. It is extremely rare that a burglar, a person who is essentially a sneak, and relies on stealth to accomplish a crime of this nature, will enter a house with a dog present. This was an important piece of information that was not lost on the investigators; one that helped link the crimes to one suspect.
By the time the investigation was in full swing, five separate residential Glen Cove burglary cases were closed. Carrillo was charged with five (5) counts of burglary 2nd degree and possession of burglar's tools. An accomplice was also arrested later that day and charged with two counts of burglary 2nd.  A portion of the jewelry that was stolen was located and recovered by detectives from a pawn broker. The defendant's homes were both searched, where additional proceeds of the crimes were recovered. The investigation is still ongoing with hopes of recovering additional property that was stolen from the victims.
