TOB Stands Firm on Anti-Solicitation Ordinance

Despite calls by many organizations within the community regarding the constitutionality of its previously-passed anti-solicitation ordinance, the Town of Oyster Bay remains firm in its efforts to curb the day laborer situation on its streets. When asked whether or not the Town of Oyster Bay felt that the increased presence of public safety officers in the area was assisting in the enforcement of the ordinance, TOB spokeswoman Phyllis Barry commented that “yes,the whole idea is that the presence of public safety officers will be a deterrent to both those seeking work and anyone who might be considering picking up a worker.” Barry further explained that “while the public safety officers could enforce [the ordinance], they are still educating the public about the ordinance. If a vehicle is spotted picking up a worker, a public safety officer takes down the license plate and the driver is sent a notice about the anti-solicitation ordinance.” Barry further commented that if residents believe that there are persons who are possibly violating the anti-solicitation ordinance, they should “contact the Nassau County Police Department, Second Precinct, at 516-573-6200.”
