Local Inaugural Events

• Adam Grohman
The first week of January 2010 included a host of inaugural events. In our local area including the Town of Oyster Bay and the City of Glen Cove, incumbents returned to another term of office. At the Nassau County level, Edward Mangano defeated Tom Suozzi in a closely contested run for County Executive but Diane Yatauro (D-Glen Cove) returned for a fourth term of service.
Town Supervisor John Venditto, Town Councilmen Chris J. Coschignano and Joseph G. Pinto, Town Councilwoman Elizabeth A. Faughnan, and Town Clerk Steven L. Labriola took the oath on Tuesday, January 5 to continue their service to the community.
City of Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Suozzi and council persons returned for another term of service. Suozzi thanked “the hundreds of city employees and volunteers who put so much effort into making our community function every day including the department heads, our city clerks and city attorney. I also wish to recognize the chiefs and supervising officers of our police, auxiliary police, harbor patrol and our incredible volunteer fire and EMS organizations.” Suozzi thanked the many dignitaries in attendance for all their “help with supplemental revenue and funding sources, new legislation, and overall support for our community and its organizations.” Suozzi also thanked “the members of the NYS congressional delegation who’ve worked to bring much needed federal dollars to our community during my tenure as mayor. Together they have helped me obtain more than $15 million in federal appropriations and stimulus monies, monies we would not have without their support. “
Suozzi continued that, “our nation, state, county and city are struggling under the worst economic conditions since the Great Depression. Glen Cove, along with the rest of Long Island, battles to maintain its vitality under the burden of high taxes, high debt, and limited and expensive housing options. This, along with the need to repair and rebuild our infrastructure while being community and environmentally sensitive, guides how our government must operate.”
Mayor Suozzi recounted the past accomplishments of the city. “Our efforts have been recognized by several regional organizations including Sustainable Long Island recognizes our experience with Brownfield reclamation. The Long Island Regional Planning Council has named the Waterfront Revitalization Project as one of regional significance. Vision Long Island has given Glen Cove four awards to date with the last two being for the ferry terminal design and again this past June in recognition of our new master plan, the first of its kind in more than 55 years. And here’s a very recent one that may very well become a model for development throughout Long Island, and perhaps the nation. Just a few weeks ago we placed into law Visual Simulation Legislation that requires all large scale and environmentally sensitive development to be presented to the City with a 3D computer simulation of the project. This way we can all see and understand the magnitude of a proposal before it is approved. We have obtained Deficit financing, created better budgets, and eliminated and reduced expenses. We have a New Waterfront Plan, with 25% reduced heights. We have reduced outstanding debt by borrowing less than we pay back. We’ve rebuilt roads, sidewalks, parks and have a brand new handicapped accessible playground at the golf course. While we have much to celebrate much remains to be done. And it will get done, because we stay focused on our goals to find common sense solutions for the common good.”
On Monday, January 4, Diane Yatauro was sworn in for her fourth term of service. Legislator Yatauro was sworn in at her office by New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. “I am honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve my constituents in the 18th Legislative District as I focus on a wide variety of issues in the communities that I represent,” said Legislator Yatauro.
Minority Leader Yatauro is the ranking member of the Legislature’s Budget Review and the Rules Committees. She also serves on the Economic & Community Development & Labor; Minority Affairs; and Veterans & Senior Affairs Legislative Committees. Legislator Yatauro represents the 18th Legislative District which includes Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Bayville, Glen Head, Locust Valley, Greenvale, Brookville and Jericho.
