King Kullen Supermarket
Re-Opens

Thomas Cullen, Vice President of King Kullen, members of the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce, Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Suozzi, Deputy Mayor and members of the Glen Cove City Council.

• Victoria Crosby
King Kullen Supermarket on Forest Avenue in Glen Cove held a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand re-opening on Friday, January 29 after the renovations of the supermarket were completed. Thomas Cullen, a third-generation member of the family business and vice president of the King Kullen Grocery Co, Inc., told The Leader that his great-grandfather, Michael Cullen, left Ireland at the turn of the last century, and at age 18, went to work at the A & P Company where he remained for 17 years. At that time, shoppers would bring in a list of items and the clerks would bring them to the customers. He wanted to have a self-service store, and so eventually, in 1930, he conceived of the idea for a self-service supermarket with shopping carts and opened his first store in a Queens County, NY warehouse. From those humble beginnings, the King Kullen chain of stores was created and it is still a family business after three generations.
The Glen Cove store has expanded to included the space left by a pizzeria that was formerly there, making the store larger, easier to navigate and offering an even wider variety of merchandise.
In celebration of the grand reopening, there were raffles items of food and gift baskets.
Among those in attendance at the opening were Mayor Ralph Suozzi, Deputy Mayor Maureen Basdavanos and City Council members Tony Jimenez, Delia DiRiggi, and Sean Dyer, and members of the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce, including Executive Director Phyllis Gorham, Mary Stanco, Lisa Cohen and Glenn Howard.
