Glen Cove Man Charged With Grand Larceny

A Glen Cove man has been charged with three felonies after embezzling more than $200,000 from the limousine service company he partially owned.
Mariusz Gromul, age 36, has been charged with Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted and is due back in court May 25.
District Attorney Kathleen Rice said that in late 2005 and early 2006, the chief executive officer for Partners Executive Transportation, a limousine service for high-end clients, noticed financial irregularities in the company’s account. Drivers worked for the company on a freelance basis, submitting vouchers to Partners, who then, in turn, billed their clients and paid the driver his or her fee.
An independent, and then internal, audit revealed that numerous checks were being issued to drivers without any accompanying voucher. Bank records indicated that the checks had been endorsed by the drivers, as well as Gromul, a part owner of the company. When questioned by investigators, the drivers revealed that they had not been issued any of the checks in question, and that their signatures had been forged. All told, Gromul allegedly stole $213,000 from the company.
“This defendant revealed his true colors when he stole from his own company,” Rice said. “He is no better than a common thief, and he will now face the consequences of his actions.”
The charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
