Locust Valley Board of Education Budget

After soliciting a great deal of feedback during three public budget forums, the Board of Education of the Locust Valley Central School District adopted a budget for the 2010-2011 school year. The budget reflects the economic challenges which residents face while striving to maintain excellence.
The budget is a 2.84% increase over the current budget; the lowest budget-to-budget increase in the district in decades. The impact of this budget is approximately a $60 to $100 increase for the entire year for a home valued at $500,000 in Bayville or Locust Valley.
The goals of the Board of Education and Administration are to preserve academic and co-curricular programs, anticipate future revenue losses and increasing unfunded mandates, as well as maintain long-term financial stability for the district and tax levies. The elimination of nearly 30% of all administrative and coordinative positions is one example of many cost-saving measures implemented to accomplish these goals. Other significant “cuts” or reductions in staff are also being implemented in the district as well as a thorough review and renegotiation of all bargaining unit contracts.
“In these challenging economic times, this budget is fiscally responsible, while preserving the academic excellence which has placed our district in the top 1% of public school systems in the nation, and which recently earned our district the distinction of being tied for first place in Nassau County for having a 99% Regents Diploma rate,” stated Board of Education President, Jack Dolce. “The budget reflects the Board’s and the Administration’s commitment and determination to control expenditures in this unprecedented economic environment.”
Residents will vote on the proposed budget on May 18 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Bayville Intermediate School, Locust Valley Intermediate School and the Community Hall of the Brookville Reformed Church.
