Earth Day in Locust Valley

Last week, Earth Day's 40th anniversary was celebrated by the Locust Valley Chamber of Commerce whose members worked hard to clean up the downtown business district. Weeds were stricken from gardens and mulch was put down. A member of the Chamber approached Kaye Weninger, Vice President, and inquired about what needed “beautifying” in Locust Valley. Kaye said that sponsors were needed to Adopt-A-Spot throughout the village. The generous and community-minded member volunteered to adopt the two gardens by the entrance to the parking lot by Marino's Cleaners. Local resident Randy Carr, from Miller Nurseries, cleaned up the area and planted two new trees. For many years, there was a beautiful old tree in that spot. Eventually, it was damaged in a storm and died. The Chamber didn't have the sources to replant the tree, so they were thrilled when someone locally stepped up with this gesture of kindness.
The new gardens were planted in memory Robert B. Gardner, Jr., who passed away one year ago this week (April 28, 2009). Mr. Gardner loved the community of Locust Valley and will always be remembered as "the man with the backpack.”
The Locust Valley Rotary held their Locust Valley Community Cleanup on Saturday, April 24. Susan Ackerman was the chairperson.
Locust Valley downtown may be only one square mile in size but is filled with hearts of many volunteers from organizations who have stepped up to help keep Locust Valley clean and beautiful. If you would like to be more involved or make a donation to help beautify Locust Valley, please call the Kaye with the Locust Valley Chamber of Commerce at 516-676-5604.
