Livermore, Virginia Pennoyer died peacefully in her sleep at home in San Rafael on April 2. She was 92.
Known to her friends as “Dina,” Virginia grew up in New York and Long Island. Dina’s father was known as a distinguished New York lawyer, her grandfather a prominent financier. Her childhood was one of privileged adventure, including time spent living in Paris, skiing in Europe, and riding her beloved horse Rosa Grey. She attended the Green Vale School in Old Brookville and the Spence School in New York City. During World War II, after a courtship of only two months, she married Norman B. “Ike” Livermore, Jr., of San Francisco. After the war, they settled in California and started a family.
The couple first lived in Cloverdale and later in San Rafael and Sacramento, as Ike’s career path took him from mule packer and redwood kiln owner to lumber executive, public servant and conservationist. Trading her past of genteel, Eastern refinement for the open spaces of California during its golden age, Dina loved to hike and ride horseback, spend summers at Lake Tahoe, and explore the Sierra with Ike. She was especially devoted to their five children, modeling for them her own values of patience, kindness, modesty, and stoicism. Though she supported the founding of Marin Country Day School in its circus tent days, and later served on the boards of trustees of the Katherine Branson School and the Thacher School, she was a very private person. She preferred quiet walks at the family’s ranch in Napa County to the public arena into which she was occasionally drawn by Ike’s career. Sunsets, birdsongs, spring daffodils, and pets made her smile. She loved reading, her uncle Sheldon Pennoyer’s California landscape paintings and chocolate desserts. She was happiest serving others and living a life of selfless devotion to her husband. Friends and guests were always welcome and fed well. All who knew her will deeply miss her warm smile and unconditional love.
Dina is survived by her sisters Tracy Schilling of Woodside, CA., and Jessie Snyder of Burlington, VT., her brother Robert Pennoyer of New York City, her daughters Penny Livermore and Pauline Jeffers, her sons Norman, Sam and Dave Livermore, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Ike, her sister Kay O’Donnell of Marlboro, MA, and her brother Paul Pennoyer of Locust Valley, NY. The family would like to express its deepest thanks to caregivers Carol Van Alstine, Ann Smyrni, and Florence Stanley for their loyal devotion during the last eight years of Dina’s life. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ross at 11am on Saturday, April 17. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City, Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, or the charity of your choice.
