Burns to Ground
A call came into the Locust Valley
Fire Department at 2:20 AM, the morning of July 10th, reporting
that there were burning wires in a tree on Ryefield Road in Lattingtown.
The chiefs of the department immediately responded to the area
to find that the home at 59 Ryefield Road was totally engulfed
in flames. Soon 45 firefighters and four trucks were on the scene,
with both Glen Cove and Bayville’s Departments responding as well.

The men went to work to put out the blaze and prevent it from
spreading to neighboring homes. The intensity of the inferno made
it impossible to enter the house; however, it was observed that
a garage on the property had an air conditioner in the window.
Firefighters entered that space which appeared to have been converted
into a small living area, but no one was in there. “The fire was
so hot, the garbage cans melted,” explained Brian Nolan, Third
Assistant Chief.
Around 7:30 the same morning, the Department was called back by
one of their firefighters who also lives on Ryefield. Upon their
arrival, they discovered the basement was still burning, and proceeded
to extinguish it. Nolan noted that a “stop work and dumping” notice
was posted on a tree outside the house. Neighbors commented that
the house had been undergoing renovations for quite some time.
Nolan recalled that their volunteer Fire Department responded
to the same house back in March of this year. Back then, they
found a smoldering fire in the fireplace with nobody home. The
telephone directory identifies J. Cotrone as having telephone
service at that address; no one returned The Leader’s calls to
the number for comment. According to Nolan, that the cause of
the fire has not been officially determined and that Fire Marshals
are investigating.
